Let the System Be the Bad Cop: How Small Business Owners Stay Out of Fight-or-Flight

By Johnny Tellez · Dad · Entrepreneurial Advisor · Boss Builder

Business coaching for owners in the 1-3 year danger zone: why systems, not emotions, should handle attendance, follow-up and hard conversations.

A year into growth, many owners hit a new ceiling and still feel like they're one bad month from the bottom. Revenue goes up, bills go up with it, and the profit gain never quite registers. We call it Post-Traumatic Boss Disorder.

You can't be the good cop and the bad cop. When the owner personally chases every cancellation or no-show, customer relationships get strained and the owner burns out.

Let the numbers do the talking. Track revenue trends, not just attendance. Look at your most loyal paying members separately. If they're paying consistently, a missed week isn't a crisis.

Automate the follow-up. Automated reminders handle the business side. The owner's personal touch stays personal: "We miss you," never a sales ask.

Do less, let the system work, recuperate, then relaunch. Security comes from knowing your numbers, not from controlling customers.

This is the People and Priority work inside our Five P's: People, Profit, Process, Promotion, Priority.
