Recurring Memberships vs. Drop-Ins: A Business Coaching Guide for Studio Owners

By Johnny Tellez · Dad · Entrepreneurial Advisor · Boss Builder

Why recurring memberships are the most reliable revenue for studio owners, and how to design tiers that cut admin and keep members.

For boutique studios, recurring memberships are usually the steadiest income stream. Here's how we coach owners to build on them.

Separate your VIPs. Long-term members on your top tier are the backbone of the business. Know who they are and protect that relationship.

Consider a recurring credit model. A fixed number of credits each month, auto-charged, use-it-or-lose-it, at a slightly lower price point, cuts admin and removes the "unused credits" frustration. Keep drop-ins as a premium, non-recurring option.

Look for high-value, low-effort offers. Couples or partner memberships can bring in two members from one sale.

Plan around seasonality. October through January is often slow. Use events and performance programs to keep activity, and cash, moving.

Get a monthly scorecard. Revenue, operating expenses, net income, revenue vs. budget, expenses vs. budget, cash balance. Automate it so it shows up every month without extra work.
